Remembering Our Favorite Moments From ‘Fever Pitch’ on the Rom-Com’s Anniversary

The mid-aughts rom-com Fever Pitch, starring Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon (pre-late-night days), stays a beloved film a few budding relationship that suffers by the hands of Red Sox fanaticism. How can a person so dedicated to his team, who lives and breathes every Sox statistic, find time for romance? Can Lindsey come to know Ben’s devotion or will his antics — which seem ridiculous to us outsiders — threaten what could otherwise be a fairytale love story? On the anniversary of this film, which was released within the US on April 8, let’s look back on a few of our favourite moments.

Impersonating Sox Players

Ben and his friends impersonate famous Red Sox players, mimicking their pitching styles, batting stances, and signature gestures with a loveable exaggerated flair. This scene highlights the camaraderie amongst the chums and their shared passion for the team.

Meeting the Parents

When Ben introduces Lindsey to his parents, viewers witness a humorous glimpse into his family dynamic. Ben’s parents (mostly his father) are portrayed as die-hard Red Sox fans deeply invested within the team’s success. Their zealous behaviors — from discussing baseball statistics on the dinner table to decorating their home with Red Sox memorabilia — add a comedic element to the scene and a (easy yet effective) window into the birth of Ben’s unhealthy obsession. Lindsey’s reactions to Ben’s family only further amplify the scene’s comedic punch, juxtaposing her norm-core disposition with their crazed-core personalities.

The Botched Proposal

Ben attempts to propose to Lindsey during a Red Sox game and all hell breaks loose. Despite his careful planning, unexpected events (dramatic game moment and the looks of the kiss cam), repeatedly interrupt his efforts. These interruptions result in humorous exchanges between Ben and Lindsey as they navigate the stadium’s chaotic atmosphere while attempting to have a heartfelt moment. The scene serves to underscore Ben’s challenges in balancing his personal relationships along with his unwavering devotion to the Red Sox.

Mascot Mayhem

During a game, Ben results in an altercation with the team’s mascot, Wally the Green Monster. Chuckle-inducing physical comedy ensues as Ben struggles to interact with the oversized and high-energy mascot, resulting in a series of humiliations. The absurdity of the situation, combined with Ben’s exaggerated reactions, provides a lighthearted moment amidst the intensity of the sport.

To Therapy

In a therapy session, Ben discusses his obsession with the Red Sox along with his therapist. As he recounts his experiences related to the team, the therapist attempts to research his behavior and its impact on his personal life. Discussing sports fandom in a therapeutic setting feels ridiculous to us non-fanatics, adding a humorous element to the scene while highlighting the absurdity of Ben’s extremism (and the lengths he’ll go to integrate the Sox into every aspect of his life).

Game-Day Rituals

Before each game, Ben follows a set of rituals and routines that he believes will influence the consequence in favor of the Red Sox. From eating specific foods, sitting in a specific seat or position, or performing certain gestures for good luck, his superstitions principally run his existence. He adheres to those rituals religiously, convinced that they hold the important thing to the team’s success. He can’t forget his lucky charms, he must avoid any jinxes, and he has to carry his breath during critical moments or the Sox will lose consequently of his failures!
