Since then, celebrations have grown across the country in the shape of concert events, parades, educational programs, and festivals. Galveston, Texas
Known because the birthplace of Juneteenth, Galveston was where General Gordon Granger of the Union Army ordered the discharge of over 250,000 enslaved blacks in Texas on June 19, 1865.
