Only a few U.S.-China flights are back despite the tip of Covid

BEIJING – Less than 6% of flights from the United States to and from mainland China that existed in 2019 have resumed, based on the Nomura report.

Flights between mainland China and Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Italy have almost returned to pre-pandemic frequencies or higher, based on a report citing data from Variflight on May 22.

“We imagine geopolitical aspects in China’s outbound tourism recovery … are clearly at play here,” Nomura’s chief China economist Ting Lu and team said in a Monday report.

In March, China brokered the restoration of diplomatic ties between Middle Eastern rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran. Beijing has refused to sentence Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine while calling for peace talks.

Meanwhile, tensions between the US and China have subsided. China’s ambassador to the US took office last week after about six months without anyone in office.

In March, Delta announced the resumption of direct flights between the United States and China, from Shanghai to Seattle and Detroit.

Overall, the variety of international flights in mainland China stays below 40% of 2019 levels, based on the Nomura report.

Analysts expect that level to rise to 70% by the tip of the 12 months as international flights return to normal in the course of the holiday season.
