US economy adds 253,000 jobs in April

The US job market continues to grow at a healthy pace, adding greater than 1 / 4 of one million jobs in April, despite turmoil within the banking sector and continued efforts by the Federal Reserve to slow the economy.

The Labor Department said on Friday that greater than 253,000 jobs were added to the economy last month, and the unemployment rate hit a 54-year low of three.4 percent.

That said, the department noted that the unemployment rate fell partly as a result of the departure of 43,000 people from the workforce, while employment in February and March was cut to much lower than initially anticipated. New job updates added in those months saw a complete of 149,000 faraway from previous estimates.
