At the top of 2022, RECOIL took an enormous step in a latest direction. We have at all times worked tirelessly to provide you unwavering insight right into a wide selection of weapons and equipment, information and expertise on developing latest skill sets, exposure to all facets of lifestyle, and a behind-the-scenes take a look at the inner workings of the arms industry and the organizations that exist to guard your constitutional rights. But even that isn’t enough for us. We have been working on creating immersion for years real-world experience that may allow not only to examine this stuff, but in addition to actively take part in them in real time. In November 2022, RECOIL established cooperation with Muffler shop to bring you this experience we called CANCON. The inaugural event was held at 17 South Rod & Gun Club on the outskirts of Savannah, Georgia.
The idea behind the event was to supply a totally suppressed training ground day. And that is what we meant by total suppression – every firearm available for firing on the event got here with a can, regardless of brand name, model or caliber. CANCON featured over 30 individual shooting courses stuffed with firearms and silencers that you’ve got seen in RECOIL over time.

Several firms even unveiled brand latest products that had never been presented to the general public before, including latest firearms and silencers that might be fired regardless that they weren’t yet in the marketplace. You needn’t bring your individual weapons, silencers or ammo – all of this was provided throughout the event. Just pay the buy-in and begin shooting! With multiple on-site FFL/SOT options, attendees not only had the possibility to realize hands-on experience with lots of of pistols and silencers, but were also in a position to file documents and buy them.
But CANCON is way more than simply a day on the shooting range. In addition to dozens of lines stuffed with suppressed firearms, there was a row of vendors with firms from all corners of the shooting industry, including Excaliber Ammo, Blue Force Gear, and Hossom Knives. The Cigar Life cigar store had a booth that hosted Hooten Young’s Vets Vices alumni. In fact, retired Special Forces operator Norm Hooten showed up in person to smoke just a few cigars and refer to people. American Gun Owners were also present, together with Stephen Willeford, who heroically stopped a mass shooter in Sutherland Springs (see CONCEDE Issue 29), educating participants in regards to the work they do within the firearms community and registering latest members.
For those that wanted a more difficult shooting experience, the Proving Grounds competition league had several short run-and-shoot stages to provide participants a taste of what’s required to compete in tactical athlete style matches across the country. Stages included shooting around vehicles, hauling heavy sandbags, and attacking various targets from an unknown distance with multiple weapons. The event also featured a series of “Joe vs Pro” pop-up competitions where event attendees could test their skills against RECOIL staff and skilled shooters.
Those who decided to pre-order tickets for CANCON online had the chance to buy a VIP package. In addition to unlimited coverage time on all three days of the event, VIPs also received a $1,500 gear bag, including a voucher for a free muffler from SilencerCo. Finally, VIP attendees got exclusive access to the overnight session with a silencer. Companies reminiscent of Night Vision Network, Sionyx, Accufire and AGM Global have given VIP shooters the chance to get hands-on with quite a lot of thermal, digital and night vision optics within the suppressed live fire environment.
Our goal at CANCON is twofold. As we said at first, it is extremely vital to us that our readers have the chance to familiarize themselves with the weapons they examine in our articles and face not only RECOIL staff, but in addition professionals from across the firearms industry. Another goal we hope to realize is to teach each our readers and most people in regards to the reality of silencers. Pop culture depictions of suppressed firearms focus solely on two stereotypes: Special Operators and Underground Assassins. By contrast, in lots of European countries, where gun ownership is way more restrictive than within the US, silencers are literally available on the market over-the-counter. Why? Because silencers are safety equipment in these countries, and silenced shooting is seen as a courtesy to neighbors and fellow athletes, not an indication of nefarious or clandestine activity.
By the time you read this, planning for CANCON 2023 will probably be well under way. Mark your calendars for Veterans Day weekend in November on the 17 South Rod & Gun Club near Savannah, Georgia. We also expect to arrange a second CANCON somewhere within the west. Keep your eyes on the web site, www.canconevent.com, for the most recent information on each events. We hope to satisfy you there!
