These five words make up a seemingly easy sentence. But it’s greater than only a phrase to me.
It is belief which led to the creation of a movement and a mission to vary the way in which the world cares for orphans.
A movement that began here with the Becoming Minimalist community and has now grown to vary countless lives all over the world due to the love of family.
Hope effect
In 2015, on this blog, I began a non-profit organization called Hope effect with a mission to vary the way in which the world cares for orphans.
It was a giant goal, but why dream of small ones? With so many individuals on this community free of the pursuit of fabric possessions, just consider the great we could bring to the world.
Immediately after the non-profit was announced, I used to be overwhelmed by the support and keenness of this community as we shared the worldwide problem we were trying to unravel. I’m continually amazed on the continued support from the Becoming Minimalist Community.
You see, hundreds of thousands of kids all over the world grow up without the love of a family. Most of those orphaned and defenseless children are cared for by large institutions, commonly often called orphanages.
Less than 1% of orphaned children will ever be adopted – so how we look after the opposite 99% matters.
Unfortunately, there are clear and convincing studies to the devastating effects of traditional, institutional orphan care that’s practiced in so many places all over the world. Children growing up in orphanages don’t receive the person attention and care that could be present in a family structure.
As a result, development is stunted and learning abilities are delayed or lost. And tragically, many children get older from orphanages only to face a way forward for crime, prostitution or human trafficking – children who grow up in institutional orphanages are 10 times more more likely to fall into prostitution, 40 times more more likely to be will likely be punished and 500 times more more likely to commit suicide!
Studies are clear – children do best once they grow up in families. That’s why The Hope Effect transforms orphan care by providing modern family care that offers every child the chance to flourish and develop. We imagine that each child deserves a family.
Over the past seven years, we now have pioneered and developed our orphan care model in several locations, including Mexico, Honduras, Thailand and Cambodia. Under the care of a family, children receive the person attention and support they need while learning what it means to be a part of a stable, loving family.
Around the world, increasingly children grow and develop under the care of their families. Children like Antonio*—the primary child to be placed within the care of a family in Sonora, Mexico—have hope for a future due to family love.
Just have a look at the work we do together.
Antonio’s story
Antonio was born in July 2020 in Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora. Unfortunately, he was immediately abandoned within the hospital. A moment after birth, he was left alone on the earth, without the love of his family.
In most developing countries all over the world, Antonio could be taken by the authorities and placed in an orphanage where he would live with other children and be cared for by a rotating team of staff.
But luckily for Antonio, there was another choice…a greater option.
Just a number of months before Antonio was born, we began working in Sonora. in February 2020 we signed an agreement with the federal government of Sonorabecoming the primary non-profit organization to receive government approval to supply family care on this location.
When Antonio was abandoned later that yr, the federal government contacted our team in Hermosillo. At only 14 days old, Antonio was welcomed into the loving arms of his family. As the primary child in Sonora to be placed within the care of a family, he had never seen the orphanage from the within.
For the past two years, we have watched Antonio grow up in a loving family. It has been amazing to see her grow and thrive in a caring, supportive and stable family environment.
Here you may see Antonio’s transformation together with your own eyes:
